PURPOSE

The Shakespeare Conquest class is comprised of youth ages 12-18 who have studied the works of Shakespeare and basics of drama for one to two years.

Each spring this group produces a play so they can...

1) Study interesting characters, understand beautiful language, learn lines and blocking, practice taking direction, work as a team to create something amazing, and experience actually performing in a timeless, classic production!

2) Earn money to pay for the group's annual summer trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah!

THEY GET TO GO TO THE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL?

In order to qualify for this road trip, each student must meet a list of requirements. Some of the things they must do are: read and analyze as a group a play in depth (this year it was Julius Caesar), ponder and write weekly about issues relating to the play they are studying, and listen/watch/read 17 different works by William Shakespeare. These young adults have been working hard all year, and are excited to now be involved in the creation phase of Much Ado About Nothing! And their fun class trip is finally just around the corner...

SO HOW DO THEY EARN THE MONEY THEY NEED?

To earn money the youth are SELLING TICKETS to their performances, SELLING ADVERTISING spots for the printed programs, and SELLING FOOD and other souvenirs at the concession stand during performance days. Records are kept, and the money each person earns individually is credited to their own register. When the amount they personally need to attend the festival has been earned, any other money they have helped gather goes toward helping the other members meet their own goals-- so they can all go together!

***THANK YOU TO ALL THE YOUTH AND PARENTS AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO HELP MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE FOR US!!***
